The Drummond Clan, loyal to Scotland and her kings fought off the invading English at the legendary battle of Bannockburn in 1314. The fast thinking and ingenuity of these brave men to cover the battle ground in caltrops (a very effective four pointed spike) proved to be crippling for the English cavalry.
Years later the Drummond Clan were rewarded for their loyalty to Scotland and their service to Robert the Bruce. As recognition for service to their country, the Drummonds were granted permission to use the caltrops in their coat of arms; the phrase ‘Gang Warily’ (Latin translation – Go Carefully) was then added to complete the now established family coat of arms.
The Drummond Clan moved to Hampshire in 1772 and acquired large areas of land in the Southampton area. A portion of this land was later purchased by a large petroleum company which resulted in the dividing of one of the Drummond farms. This divided land was later named ‘Gang Warily’ from the family coat of arms; and it was only fitting that when Fawley Parish Council purchased this land for a local sports & community centre that in 1986 Gang Warily Recreation Centre was opened to the public.
Located on the outskirts of the New Forest national park, Fawley has existed as a settled area for many centuries. Within Fawley parish you can find some extremely picturesque locations, along with significant historical landmarks, some of which have been mentioned in the Doomsday book.
Situated in the heart of Fawley village is a stone Norman church known as ‘All Saints’. This beautiful building dates back to the twelfth century, and is still a highlight for many visitors to the parish. Many other buildings within Fawley have great significance and history, like the ‘Jubilee Hall’ which was built by public subscription to mark the golden jubilee of Queen Victoria.
In 1921 the face of the parish was changed with the introduction of Esso oil refinery. The scarcely populated areas of agriculture were transformed into what has now become Blackfield and Holbury.
Sitting quietly out of the way, and complementing Fawley village is the historic and very picturesque ‘Ashlett Creek’. This beautiful nineteenth century tide mill adds emphasis to the small hamlet of buildings, including the ‘Jolly Sailor’ pub and the nineteenth century yellow brick farmhouse; better know as ‘Ashlett House’.
